the legislature in virginia this year, signed into law by the republican governor in the state, bob mcdonnell. virginia voters opposed that law by 17 points. the anti-abortion crusade that has been undertaken this year by republican-led state government in virginia is not popular in virginia. and now virginia women are prepared to take it out on the presidency, right? they're planning to vote against the republicans' candidate for president in their state by 18 points. and that was the context for a really important move made by virginia's republican attorney general this week, a move that could be important for the presidential race in virginia. this week the attorney general certified a new set of regulations targeted only at abortion clinics in the united states. these rules are not just for oral surgeons or plastic surgery centers, just targeting abortion providers. it's red tape that is specifically designed to make it economically impossible to operate an abortion clinic in virginia. that's what's expected to happen in the state. most of the state's abortion clinics are in dan

the top of the ticket in this case. >> in terms of the soothing, dana, bob dole was very soothing to mr. romney or he wrote over this weekend an op ed piece that i'm sure was intended to be soothing. i certainly wouldn't have liked it if i was the nominee. but his intent, i'm sure, was to be soothing because he wrote no one aspires to be defeated -- a defeated presidential candidate. but then he went on further and he argued that there is light at the end of the tunnel for dole that was an improbable career, pitching visa, duncan donuts and viagra. and he goes on to say, the greatest of life blessings cannot be counted in electoral votes. so he's telling mr. romney, i assume, don't worry about it. you can do what i did and i guess that's soothing. >> it's soothing in a many of speaking but there's a crucial different here and that is that bob dole in 1996 fought the good fight. but, look, the economy by then was booming. nobody really gave him a chance of winning. what is happening here is you have romney losing a race that everybody thought he was perfectly capable of winning. so if

poll released over the weekend put the democrat in that race bob casey ahead of his republican challenger by eight points. as mitt romney's, shall we say, second place standing starts to look like more and more of a permanent residence as it seems like a long shot for winning the presidency, the down ticket effect of that is starting to become a bigger part of the conversation. you saw a manifestation of that last week on this show when nancy pelosi came on this show and said, essentially, democrats can win back the house. nancy pelosi said not only is she confident that democrats can get the 25 seats they need to take e back control of the house, which is a huge number, she says she, quote, liked to have 35 seats, which would be a lot. and while it is news worthy that the democrats think they can take back the house, it should be said that a number of other observers looking at the same prospect are call k the idea that the democrats could take back the house pretty much impossible. politico publishing a piece on it. one of the consequences of republicans winning so many seats
